After the FIFA World Cup 1930, which was hosted and won by Uruguay, football gained popularity all over Latin America. Inspiring Juan Carlos Ceriani, a teacher from Montevideo, to create a version of indoor football for boys to play at their local YMCA’s.

His idea was to combine the principles of different sports including football, basketball, handball and water polo, creating a fun and dynamic game. Futsal soccer spread rapidly throughout Latin America, especially in Brazil, where even some world famous football stars like Pele, Ronaldinho, and Bebeto developed their skills by playing it.

Popularity

One of the main reasons why it became so popular is probably the fact that you can play it anywhere, anytime and in any weather condition, which allowed people to stay fit through the whole year. After years of changes and upgrades of the game, the first international championship took place in South America in the 60’s.

More and more countries followed the new trend and today Futsal is played all over the world by millions of people, professionally and recreationally. In this article we’re gonna try to explain some futsal basics, show that it is not just a smaller version of football and present you the equipment you need. Footsall or futsal

Some people call this sport footsall, other call it futsal. You have to know that we are talking about the same sport with this two names.

Firstly, since futsal soccer gets compared a lot to it’s »bigger brother« football, we’re gonna take a good look at rules, to avoid any further confusion. Although the key idea, to kick the ball into the opponents goal more times they do in yours, is the same, futsal soccer and football don’t have that much in common.

  • Players:

In futsal, each team consists of 5 players, one of them being the goalkeeper.  Throughout the game, players can get exchanged as many times as they want, and unlike in football, players that have been sent off can come back later in the game. There are no regulations whatsoever.

  • Game Lenght:

The game lasts for a total of 40 minutes (2×20 minute halves). The clock is stopped if the ball is not in play. There is one time-out per half.

  • Fouls:

Mostly any contact or unrespectful behavior is considered a foul in futsal. The rules around this are very strict and only 5 fouls per half are tolerated. A free kick is approved each thereafter. After being given a red card, the player sent off can join the game again after 2 minutes or if the other team scores.

  • Referees:

There are two referees with very little difference in responsibility.

All of the above differ futsal from regular football, but there are three main differences that make the game way more dynamic and because of which futsal players require a more specialized technique. Those are the court, ball, and the goals.

  • The court:

The official futsal court dimensions are 20x40m. Compared to a normal football court that’s about 8-times smaller, causing the futsal players to have about 4 times less space than football players. Thus the passes are shorter and there is less space in general to control the ball. The distance of the ball to the goal is never far so shots can be expected at any time, making the game more exciting and fast.

  • The ball:

The official futsal ball is a size 4 with 30% less bounce than a size 5 football ball. The ball is smaller, harder and bounces less (stays on the floor better) and is thus easier controlled. This lets you play in a more intricate style.

  • The goals + futsal goal dimensions:

The official futsal goal is 2 meters high and 3 meters wide. The goalkeeper is able to reach almost any corner of the goal making it harder for the other team to score. Shots also need to be hit more hard for more chances.
